Space-time methods for parabolic evolution equations with applications in data assimilation

We consider parabolic evolution equations in a simultaneous space-time variational formulation. We present some new results on the minimal residual discretisation introduced by R. Andreev. Our findings will be illustrated by an adaptive solution method based on wavelets-in-time and finite elements in space. Besides the well-posed forward problem, we consider data-assimilation problems associated to parabolic PDEs. Also such ill-posed problems will be tackled numerically with least squares solvers.
