FEM for Lavrentiev

A talk in the BI.discrete Workshop series by
Anna Kh. Balci from Bielefeld

Abstract: We study the convergence of the finite element method for variational problems with Lavrentiev gap. It is well know that conforming schemes fail (due to results of Ball, Carstensen and others), we prove that the solution of the Crouzeix-Raviart scheme converges to a "correct" minimiser. Numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the scheme and give additional analytical insights. This talk is based on the joint work with Johannes Storn and Christoph Ortner.
