Nonlocal Aspects in Geometric Analysis

A talk in the Mathematisches Kolloquium & Mathematisches Kolloquium (SFB 1283) series by
Armin Schikorra from University of Pittsburgh

Abstract: A classical problem in the geometric calculus of variations is the problem of finding particularly “nice” representatives within a class of geometric objects. These representatives are usually achieved by finding minimizer/maximizer/critical points of an energy functional acting on these objects.

Quite surprisingly, even in very classical situations these questions are intrinsically related to seemingly non-geometric notions like fractional order derivatives.

We will discuss examples of minimal surfaces, harmonic maps between manifolds and knot energies -- and observe the relation to "fractional versions" of geodesics. We will also discuss to what extent these observations are useful...
