Dispersive Estimates beyond the Potential Well

Abstract: Dispersive estimates quantify the rate at which waves spread and decay. Traditionally, such estimates are understood as perturbations of free evolution, e.g., the Laplacian with a localized potential. Motivated by problems in materials science, we consider settings in which this paradigm breaks down. We will first discuss the time-periodic Dirac equation, where one can construct mechanisms leading to anomalously slow dispersion. As time allows, we will also discuss periodic Jacobi operators on the half-line, which provide a discrete setting in which the relevant comparison dynamics is again periodic rather than free.
